1
Step
Condition your FIMO Professional clay in white, magenta, yellow, and purple. FIMO Professional is selected for this project because its firmness prevents the marbled swirls and dimensional flower petals from distorting during shaping and piercing.
2
Step
To create the marbled buttons, roll out white and magenta clay into thin ropes, twist them together, fold, and gently roll into a slab. Lightly dust a round cutter with cornstarch as a release agent, then cut out the circular button blanks to capture the marbled pattern.
3
Step
For the dimensional daisy buttons, cut purple base discs. Shape yellow clay into small teardrop petals, dusting your tools with cornstarch beforehand to prevent sticking. Wipe the raw contact areas on the purple backing discs with a damp cotton swab to remove any release powder, then press the yellow petals and purple center details firmly in place to ensure a strong raw-to-raw bond.
4
Step
Carefully pierce two centered sew-through holes in each raw button using a needle tool or a small brass tube. Rotate the tool gently to ensure the holes are clean, smooth, and wide enough for yarn or heavy thread to pass through without snagging.
5
Step
Shape each button into a gentle dome. Place the raw, pierced buttons onto a curved, heat-safe surface, such as a metal doming mold or a hollow paint palette. This ensures they retain their professional, curved profile during the baking process.
6
Step
Bake the buttons on their curved supports according to the clay manufacturer instructions. After they cool completely, clear any remaining debris from the holes. Seal the buttons with a compatible water-based polyurethane glaze, such as Varathane, or UV resin for a glossy, durable finish; avoid aerosol sprays or solvent-based glazes, which will remain sticky.
