1
Step
Condition your polymer clay colors (yellow, hot pink, white, turquoise, green, black, and a tiny amount of white for the highlight) until pliable. FIMO Professional is recommended for maintaining these precise, graphic shapes without distortion. Roll the yellow, hot pink, and white clays into even slabs approximately 2 mm thick. Lightly dust your work surface or cutters with cornstarch as a release agent to prevent sticking.
2
Step
Cut a large almond shape from the yellow slab to serve as the backing plate. Cut a slightly smaller almond shape from the hot pink slab, then cut out its center to create a thick pink frame. Wipe the raw clay contact surfaces with a damp cotton swab to remove any cornstarch residue, then center the pink frame on top of the yellow base, leaving a thin yellow border exposed around the outer edge.
3
Step
Roll thin, uniform logs of hot pink clay. Cut them into short segments with rounded ends to form the eyelashes. Arrange these segments radially along the pink frame, allowing them to extend slightly over the outer yellow border. Use a silicone clay shaper to gently press and secure the inner ends of the lashes into the pink frame, ensuring a seamless, raised relief pattern.
4
Step
Cut an almond shape from the white slab that fits snugly inside the pink frame to form the sclera. For the iris, cut concentric circles of decreasing sizes from the turquoise, green, and yellow clays. Stack them concentrically, wiping each layer with a damp cotton swab before joining to ensure a strong raw bond. Add a small black circle for the pupil, and place a tiny white clay circle in the center as a highlight.
5
Step
Press the white sclera into the center of the pink frame, then center the stacked iris assembly on top of the sclera. Smooth any fingerprints or dust from the surface using a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Place the assembled brooch on a flat ceramic tile and bake in a preheated oven according to the manufacturer's instructions, using an oven thermometer to ensure temperature accuracy.
6
Step
Once the piece has cooled completely, clean the back of the yellow clay base and the metal brooch pin finding with rubbing alcohol to remove surface oils. Apply a high-strength adhesive like Devcon 2-Ton Epoxy or E6000 to bond the metal pin to the clay. Avoid using brittle cyanoacrylate (super glue), which fails on smooth metal. If a sealer is desired, apply a compatible water-based polyurethane like Varathane or UV resin, avoiding solvent-based glazes or aerosol clear coats.
