1
Condition FIMO Professional clay and roll out 3 mm slabs of white and peach-coral clay. Lightly dust a circular cutter with cornstarch to act as a release agent, then cut out five circular button bases
four white and one peach-coral.
2
Step
Roll out thin, even snakes of silver-gray, pastel pink, and red-orange clay. Twist two strands of the same color together to create a uniform rope pattern. Wipe the perimeter of the button bases with a damp cotton swab to remove any residual cornstarch, then wrap the twisted ropes around the edges, trimming the ends flush and securing them with a touch of liquid clay.
3
Sculpt the miniature low-relief motifs
a yellow sun-lion face, a yellow five-petal flower, a blue-and-green plant, a red-orange abstract floral design, and a green cactus. Wipe the center of each button base with a damp cotton swab, then gently press each motif into place to ensure a strong raw-to-raw bond.
4
Step
Carefully pierce two parallel sew-through holes through the center of each button using a needle tool or toothpick. Ensure the holes are clean, round, and spaced consistently across all five buttons to allow for easy sewing.
5
Step
Bake the buttons flat on a ceramic tile in a preheated oven according to the clay manufacturer's instructions, using an oven thermometer to verify the temperature. Allow the buttons to cool completely before handling.
6
Step
Apply a thin, even coat of a compatible water-based polyurethane glaze, such as Varathane, or a thin layer of UV resin to the front of each button to achieve a high-gloss, ceramic-like finish. Avoid solvent-based glazes or aerosol clear coats, which can react with the clay and remain sticky.
