1
Step
Condition cobalt blue polymer clay until it is smooth and pliable. We recommend using Sculpey Soufflé for this project to achieve a lightweight, velvety matte surface. Compress a ball of aluminum foil into a pear shape to serve as a lightweight core, which prevents the clay from cracking during the baking process.
2
Step
Wrap the conditioned cobalt clay around the foil core, smoothing out any trapped air. Shape the clay into a plump, rounded cat body with a wide, stable base and two small triangular ears. Roll the base gently on your work surface to ensure the figurine stands flat and secure.
3
Step
Roll out thin sheets of pastel pink and bright yellow clay. Cut or tear irregular, organic-shaped patches from these sheets, lightly dusting any templates or cutters with cornstarch as a release agent. Wipe the raw blue body with a damp cotton swab to remove any surface oils, then press the pink and yellow patches onto the body, smoothing them flat.
4
Step
To create the signature matte, slightly textured finish, gently press a textured sponge or soft toothbrush over the entire raw clay surface. This unifies the texture across the blue base and the colored spots, giving the piece a cohesive, handcrafted look.
5
Step
Bake the figurine on a ceramic tile in a preheated oven according to the manufacturer's instructions. Allow the piece to cool completely before handling to ensure the clay has fully cured and hardened.
6
Step
Use a fine liner brush and acrylic paint to add the face. Paint the yellow inner ears, yellow dot eyes, a small yellow nose, and three white whiskers on each cheek. Protect the painted details with a thin coat of water-based polyurethane sealer, avoiding sticky solvent-based sprays or aerosol clear coats.
