Make a bold blue cat as a flat-back clay piece

You cut the flat-back cat base, add the spot and face details, then decide what it becomes: a brooch, magnet, pendant-style charm, or a small desk piece, once the finished weight and backing pass your tests.

Print the stencil masks when you would rather paint the spots, ears, and face marks as flat colour instead of layering clay. Optional alternate to the applique route.

These paint-through stencil masks are a different tool from the face-placement press guide in the cutter set: the press guide only debosses light position marks and does not paint or cut through.

How you'll make it

The build, at a glance

Three moves carry this build: cut the blue body, layer the spots and face in order, then prove the backing on the finished weight. The paid guide keeps the exact sizes and sequence; this is the shape of what you are signing up for.

Step 1 - applique cutters first
Start with the applique route
The applique cutters are the primary build and the closest match to the reference. The printed stencil masks and the one-slab relief cutter are optional alternates for painted spots or a tonal test.
Step 2 - applique cutters
Build the cat face
Cut the base first, then add the ears, spots, and face details in a controlled order so the cat still reads after baking and finishing.
Step 3 - hardware testing
Test the backing route
Before wear or sale, test pull, sag, spin, adhesive, rear flatness, and hardware placement on the finished weight.

Flat-back cat method

Start with the applique cutters: they build the cat as clean colour layers and are the closest match to the reference. The printed stencil masks and the one-slab relief cutter are optional alternates, not equal routes. Choose brooch, magnet, charm, or desk-display hardware only after the finished piece passes the backing checks.

What you bring

One strong cobalt does the heavy lifting, with small amounts of pink, yellow, white, and a dark detail colour for the spots and face. Add your usual rolling and cutting setup, a 3D printer or print service for the tools, and the backing hardware you plan to test.

Rest the clay, dust lightly, and lift with a thin blade instead of pulling by hand.

Brooch twists on fabric

Move to a larger or better-balanced backing route and retest on the intended fabric.

Use a flatter back, lighter clay face, or stronger hardware only after testing the exact surface.

Repurpose

Same cutters, another finished piece

The same cat face can move between formats, but each format needs its own hardware check on the finished weight before wear or sale.

Brooch

Keep the back flat, place the pin for balance, and test on the fabric weight you expect to use.

Magnet

Use a flat rear landing zone and test pull, slide, and twist on the intended metal surface.

Desk display

Use the larger cat as a small leaning plaque or desk buddy only after checking base contact and tipping.

Pendant-style charm

Add a bail or hole route only after testing swing, edge strength, and finished weight.
